General:

Bakelite is a composite material based on thermohydrogenated phenolic resin obtained from formaldehyde and phenol for electrophilic substitution; Bachilite cotton fabric is the result of the stratification of pure cotton fabrics with and the phenolic resin compound, depending on the number of wires on cm2, are calibrated with the F – FF and G reading. The number of wires changes the caracters and residences mechanical.
Born in 1907, it is the first thermosetting material, that is, a material that, when melted, cooled and hardened, can no longer be heated or remodeled.
In the field of industry it has brought a great innovation, because of its features and the low costs it has had a great diffusion up to the 50 years later replaced slowly by the new plastic materials.
Bakelite has thermal-insulating properties that, in the past, have largely been used in electro-electric elements, electrical switches, electric sockets, cookware handles, radiosets, and others. The first synthetic plastic material produced and used, although preceded by natural-based plastics

Technical features:

• Good dielectric characteristics even in humid environments
• Excellent friability even in cold weather.
• Very good heat resistance.
• Flexible
• Very hard and tanace
• Excellent self-lubricating
• Absorption to water is not excessive
• Easily collapsible
• HB auto-extinguishing class
• Resists industrial solvents
• Good mechanical features, gentle thanks to the introduction of the cotton fabric

Defects:

• Despite the good thermal insulation properties it is not suitable for working in high temperature environments.
• Sunlight and time can darken the color
• Creates dust at startup
• Not resistant to acids especially if in strong concentrations

Applications:

The most important applications are in the mechanical and electrical sector. Used in low-voltage apparatus, electrical cabinets and supports. Ideal for making gears, bushings, cams, silent gears.
